“The Best That Never Was”“The Best That Never Was” is a 30 for 30 documentary produced by ESPN about his life and career by Marcus Dupree. Almost all of the topics we discussed in class this semester found their way into this documentary. There was everything from racism, to permissibility to ethical behavior from everyone involved in the sport, including the agents. I will focus specifically on these three themes because I believe they have the most direct correlation between the film and classroom discussions. I will follow my thoughts on the film and some of the key players. When Marcus started playing youth soccer; his hometown of Philadelphia, Mississippi, was a decade removed from one of the most infamous cases of racial crime in U.S. history. Ironically, at the end of the film, Cecil Price Sr., who was the deputy sheriff at the beginning of the civil rights crimes, did not hesitate to help Marcus when he wanted to get his CDL.
