The theme is that it is human nature to blindly follow practices, policies and traditions until the negative effects are felt. For example, in “The Lottery,” Tessie Hutchinson's character follows the example of her family and neighbors by entering the town lottery. However, it was only until she was unjustly sentenced to death that she began to deny the practice. Watching her neighbors and family crowd around her, armed with rocks, she began to plead, “It's not fair, it's not fair” (36). Moreover, these particular behaviors can also be observed in contemporary society. When the question of war or violence arises, the loudest voices make the decision; even if the silent voices of the majority say something different.
