By definition, obedience is "dutiful or submissive compliance" according to Dictionary.com. Not only that, however, the first example of the word obedience on this site appeared in a sentence relating to military service. But there is much more to obedience. I believe that obedience is not just about the submission aspect but also about the gray areas around it. Submitting, challenging authority itself, and the consequences that follow obedience are not always read between the lines of the exact definition. Perhaps it should contain the following definition: Obedience is the act of yielding to an authoritative command that may not always bring joyful or beneficial consequences. Military commands sometimes involve dropping bombs on cities harboring civilians, assassinating enemy soldiers, and fighting across seas far from their families. I believe it is important to know that obeying and trusting authority does not always mean success or a desired outcome. Obedience is a key factor in the film A Few Good Men, which shows many characters under military command. Rob Reiner presents Lieutenant Colonel Markinson as helpless based on situational influences. A Few Good Men is an intense film that shows the military system through an investigation into the death of Santiago, a private first class. Lieutenant Kaffee, a lawyer and son of an honored military lawyer, is assigned to defend two Marines accused of the murder of Private Santiago, even though they were simply carrying out their order to carry out a "Code Red". In the film, Santiago was a misfit marine who needed to learn a lesson according to Colonel Jessep. Jessep, the colonel in command of the Cuban base and was the one who ordered the Code Red, does everything to cover you...... middle of paper...... knowledge and courage to do what is right for the others and for our conscience. In today's world, there are so many cases where people have the opportunity to avoid responsibility for their actions, and this must be changed or, as Fromm predicted, our society will end up obeying powers we are not safe and therefore we will “commit”. suicide”.Works CitedA Few Good Men.
