Slaves were property and serfs were expected to give most of their crops and labor to their landowners, yet they too “guaranteed subsistence” which a proletariat did not do, according to Engels' "Outline of a Communist Confession of Faith". The serf could work harder to increase his share of the harvest, however, no matter how hard the proletariat worked, his wages would remain the same.
