The Movie A Beautiful Mind (Howard, 2011) is a biography about the life of John Nash, a famous mathematician. John Nash is best known for his many contributions to mathematics, such as solving Riemann's most complicated mathematical problem and became famous for what is known as the Nash Solution. Nash begins his career at Princeton where he is a highly intelligent and well-known graduate student in mathematics. While at Princeton Nash begins trying to discover a revolutionary equation in mathematics while battling many different illusions. The first friend Nash meets is his roommate at Princeton who soon becomes his best friend. Then, when he is promoted to a mathematics professor at another college, he begins to think that he is working with the government by helping it break Soviet codes. Later in the film many of these different people and situations all appear to be an illusion in John Nash's mind. Nash has difficulty distinguishing between illusions and what is really happening. So, after watching the movie A Beautiful Mind, I came to the conclusion that John Nash exhibits symptoms of schizophrenia, more specifically paranoid schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a challenging disorder that makes it difficult to distinguish between what is real and unreal, to think clearly, to manage emotions. , relate to others and function normally. (Smith,2004,pg1.) It is stated that most cases of schizophrenia appear later in adolescence or early adulthood. Those who suffer from schizophrenia have difficulty distinguishing between reality and illusions. They see things that don't exist and speak in strange and difficult to understand ways and usually feel like everyone is out to get them or hurt them. Schizophrenia is a disorder that can ... middle of paper ... govern itself more often and is unable to distinguish between what is real and what it sees. John later is admitted to hospital for help. John receives help and then begins to learn to control his delusions and block his daemons. Throughout the entire move John exhibits many different delusions and hallucinations. Everything he believes is real, yet he is the only one who sees these things and knows these things are happening. When speaking to others John tends to stutter and suffers from disorganized speech. Nash used very correct terms when he spoke and usually linked everything to a math problem. He rarely showed emotion when interacting with others. These are all symptoms and signs that have manifested themselves over the years. This shows that suffering from all these signs over a period of time proves that Jon is suffering from paranoid schizophrenia.
