As in Egypt, Orwell demonstrates through his allegorical novel “Animal Farm” that leaders are capable of establishing and maintaining power over a people and, in turn, create an oppressive and corrupt government system.Orwell shows the significant difference in the education and knowledge levels of animals and how the government takes advantage of this difference. The rift between the levels of intelligence is represented in the first chapter when the idea of rebellion arises: "...the stupidest of them had already learned the melody and a few words, and as for the intelligent ones, like pigs and dogs, they had to I can remember the whole song in a few minutes” (Orwell 13). When Old Major, the spark that ignited the idea of revolution, dies, the supposedly more intelligent farm animals begin to yearn for rebellion: "The Major's speech had given the more intelligent animals on the farm a completely new". outlook on life…they saw clearly that it was their duty to prepare” (Orwell 15). Animals that appear to be on the less informed/less educated side of the spectrum are not as affected. They get on with life and the pigs manage to establish an oppressive regime due to the other animals' ignorance and disinterest in the well-being of the farm. The pigs do not try to dissuade the animals from trying to be polite; however, they encourage animals to be content with their lack of knowledge (Orwell 34). Animals are therefore unable to have opinions or take part in discussions for the well-being of the entire community.
