The Holocaust is one of the best documented events in history, yet, nearly 20% of Americans still question whether the Holocaust ever happened (Darnell). Holocaust denial is defined as the belief or assertion that the Holocaust did not happen or has been greatly exaggerated (Google). The Holocaust was a deliberate plan to exterminate groups including Jews, communists, homosexuals, the mentally handicapped, and non-Aryans. In the Holocaust, the Nazis killed six million Jews and six million non-Jews. Many Holocaust deniers claim that the victims were never killed intentionally and died coincidentally of typhus, starvation, or bombing. Deniers also believe that gas chambers were never used to kill large groups of people. According to biblebilievers.org, a website written by the editor of the Institute for Historical Review, the rooms' doors and windows were not "hermetically sealed." Without this closure, the gas would have escaped from the chambers and killed everyone in the area, including the Nazis. Holocaust deniers also believe that the facts of the Holocaust have been greatly exaggerated. A primary Holocaust resource, The Diary of Anne Frank, is considered counterfeit because parts of the diary were written with a ballpoint pen, which was not used at the time the diary was written ("Hoax"). Different regions and world religions react to Holocaust denial in numerous ways. A group of Holocaust deniers is growing very rapidly in the Middle East. The fear of Holocaust denial riots has led Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Israel and Switzerland to make Holocaust denial illegal (Responding). Closer to the United States, in Canada, prison can be given to a person who supports genocide. The law reads: “Eva… middle of paper… will be controlled if her ideas get out of control. Influenced youth should not change our rights. Holocaust denial should not be banned; the state must take responsibility for revealing the truth of the facts about the Holocaust to young people. Textbooks should continue to include facts and not opinions. However, having information from other countries' perspectives would allow for a greater understanding of what really happened during the Holocaust. The Holocaust is one of the greatest crimes against humanity ever seen. The deliberate elimination of different groups of people has been denied for several years. Holocaust denial is the belief that the Holocaust did not happen or has been greatly exaggerated. Holocaust denial is illegal in several countries, but not in the United States. Holocaust denial should remain legal in the United States to preserve the First Amendment.
