Topic > Homicide Rate and Prevention in Indianapolis - 1186

If the homicide rate does not continue to decline, the beautiful city of Indianapolis will not only be known for sports and amenities, but also for criminal homicides. However, the situation has changed enormously in the last four years. The Department of Public Safety's Crime Analysis Section (DPS CAS) has released statistical criminal homicide rates for the years 2007-2010. These statistical rates are a blow to the criminal homicides that occurred in 2007 and 2008 which, in both years, tied with 114 homicides in those two years. The homicide rate for the year 2009 is 100 and for 2010 the homicide rate is 94. There is also an updated year-to-date statistical chart from the Department of Public Safety's Office of Crime Analysis that states that there have been 81 homicides in Indianapolis so far from the dates of January 1, 2011 to October 8, 2011. Hopefully, the number of criminal homicides will continue to decrease as the year goes on (DPS CAS, 2011). During the Department of Public Safety's investigation, homicide indices (DPS UHI) remained unsolved, a total of forty-three criminal homicides still remain unsolved in the years 2008 and 2009, resulting in twelve unsolved homicides for the year 2008 and thirty-one for the year year 2009. These are very high numbers for unsolved murders considering that in the years 2008 and 2009 a total of 214 murders occurred. This means that almost 21% of the murders that occurred in those years are still to be solved. For these unsolved criminal homicides, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) should take a more aggressive approach to solving these cases. Due to the time that has passed, IMPD should refresh the public's memory by broadcasting these...... middle of paper ...... city of Indianapolis.
