Majority vs MinoritiesThe majority and minority bring about change in politics in a democratic society. Majority rule means that if there was an overwhelming amount of support on an issue, their voices would be heard by the government. Our government is run by majority rule. People in our society elect officials and place their trust in them to make their choices. In a majority the basic concept of democracy is that ultimately it is the people who govern. The government passes laws that appear to be the “deliberative will” of the people. However, the government does not do everything the people want. He takes the information, absorbs it and provides a solution for the majority. In order for people to be heard, they need to get out and participate in the political process. It is our constitutional right to vote, speak and contribute to choosing our representative in a majority. Minority rights in a democratic society appear to level with majority rule in an unusual way. There are some incidents where the minority may have lost, but on the other hand they won. For example, when Rosa Parks did not give up her seat on that hot Alabama day, she opposed the tyranny of the majority. The majority, however, won by putting her in prison; the minority prevailed by creating civil rights movements. There are many differences between majority rule and minority rights. One of the big differences between the two is the tyranny of the majority. This happens when the majority violates the rights of the minority. When the majority thinks they are right it can happen that they judge or abuse minorities who oppose them. For a long time, majorities believed that political equality and political freedom did not belong to minorities. Minorities believed they had the right to speak or participate in any function they believed in.
