Topic > What It Takes to Be an Academic Writer - 942

Academic writing is no different from all other writing, except that, in addition to having a purpose and an audience like any other writing, academic writing is based on evidence (Laureate Education, 2012). It is important, since the scholar-professional writes for a specific audience, that his material is free from personal opinions, assumptions and prejudices. When writing scholarly material, a scholar-practitioner must have an objective tone, write clearly, concisely, produce mechanically correct writing that contains evidence-based material. Before starting to write, a scholar-professional should first consider the purpose of the writing, then the audience to be addressed in the writing. As Walden students and scholar-professionals, we have a specific type of audience, which includes faculty, staff, classmates, and members of the larger academic community. These are professional, highly critical, and informed readers with high expectations who expect writers to be objective with the words they use and the ideas they present to convey the purpose of their message (Laureate Education, 2013). It is important for the scholar-practitioner and Walden University student to understand that practitioners are ready and available to provide professional feedback and tools based on evidence presented in writing to promote academic learning and growth. In everyday writing, which includes emails, blogs, letters, or even text messages, most of the time they are writing a message to convey to a specific person or group. In this case, more recent statistical data from a government agency such as the Department of Education would have been a more reliable source than Business Week in 2001, unless the source of the information was generated from common research sources ( Graduate Education, 2013). In short, this writing may require major revision regarding bias, opinion, quality of evidence, and appropriateness for the target audience. In conclusion, when writing, a scholar-professional must ensure that he or she presents appropriate material to the public. targeted audience without personal opinions, assumptions and prejudices. Furthermore, it is essential that the writer not only checks the validity and quality of the evidence used, but that the writing has an objective, clear, concise tone and produces mechanically correct writing that contains evidence-based material..
