An article by John Piper titled “Truth and Love” offers a compelling relationship between how the world defines and handles education and how it relates to what the Bible has to say about it. Piper says: "I find instead of the words 'education' and 'relationship', the words 'truth' and 'love'." (Piper, 2011) The way these two are completely parallel can teach people a tremendous amount about how to have meaningful relationships. If education is truth and relationship is love, then they are connected. To love someone is to have a relationship with them, to tell someone the truth is to educate them about something. Therefore, how cruel it is to deny knowledge or, even worse, teach them a modified education. Having one without the other is like taking away a vital part of a machine, it just won't work the way it was created to. Friendships will not work as they were designed if love or truth is absent. Just as truth supports love, Piper follows this by talking about how love is equally supportive of truth. “But there is a way to tell the truth in love, and we should seek it. This is not always a kind way of speaking, otherwise Jesus would have been accused of lack of love in dealing with some people in the Gospels. But he asks what is the most useful thing to say when everything is considered. Sometimes what would have been a harsh word for one group is a necessary act of love for another group and not an injustice to the group it is addressed to. But in general, love shapes the truth into patient and kind words and ways (2 Timothy 2:24-25).” (Piper, 2011) A general misconception that speaking the truth in love must be meek and quiet is often what stops people from being bold in love in their relationships.
