Geothermal energy: an innovative solution The earth is slowly being destroyed because its inhabitants are hungry for energy. Currently, energy is mainly produced from fossil fuels, which cause serious damage to the environment. Using geothermal energy helps relieve some of the pressure on oil and coal and is much more environmentally friendly. People living in the areas surrounding geothermal plants and those who work on the plant or within the plant will be affected for the better. Geothermal energy is a clean, renewable resource and a great benefit to life on earth. With minimal pollution, the geothermal energy resource is more environmentally friendly than its energy-producing counterparts such as coal and oil. Emissions are essentially zero given the nature of geothermal plants. They don't use many toxic materials in energy production. While the chemicals have the potential to harm the water supply, they are adequately contained (National Geographic Society, “Geothermal Energy Information”). Because geothermal plants are usually located in remote areas, it is difficult for the water to reach a place where it could affect people. The geothermal energy resource causes minimal damage to the environment, but also has a positive effect on many people. In this source of energy, both the common good and individual rights are valorised. It provides energy constantly and creates jobs for locals (Union of Concerned Scientists, “How Geothermal Energy Works”). Pessimists might point out that it is expensive to build geothermal plants, but the operating costs are very low, allowing it to be competitive with other energy sources (Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, “Geothermal Electricity”).
