Monsters come in many shapes, forms, and sizes. Some of these creatures are grotesque and otherworldly, while others appear no different from their innocent neighbors next door. What defines a monster can drastically transform from purely physical to exclusively psychological. There are many ways to create physical monsters; from sewing together stolen body parts to unleashing a curse and many ways to abuse and neglect someone until they reach a mental breaking point. Regardless of the circumstances, there seems to be one universally understood truth: cruelty creates monsters. While it may not always be an outside force that creates such unfortunate situations for these future monsters, evil and callousness can always be found surrounding these creatures. Monsters created through mad science and infection may not necessarily be an evil, angry creature from their conception. , but the underlying intentions of their creators can cause them to change personalities. When creating these abominations, the creator usually intends for the creature to carry out his nefarious plans. To suit their intentions, monster creators give their designs a look that ranges from uncomfortable to look at to nightmarish. While there may be times when inventors intend their creation to be a beautiful and wonderful being, false life is rarely an embraceable thing (Frankenstein). When seen by the public, monsters are feared, hunted, and rejected. Due to the perhaps unintentional cruelty of these civilians, the monsters may become frightened, angry and begin to lash out. Lashing out, these creatures become a living terror, exactly what their creators had hoped for or their own waking nightmare. A human who acts like a monster... middle of paper... rejects those emotions and returns to their socially acceptable “rational” self. While monsters represent the darker aspects of humanity, there is also a representation of humanity's lighter side. This lightness is often represented through other mythical creatures. Creatures such as unicorns, fairies and centaurs symbolize that there is something greater than the darkness of the world. While monsters are meant to characterize the negative and lesser side of mankind, these other mythical and fantastical creatures are meant to symbolize humanity's aspirations. The stories of such fantastic creatures are full of emotions rewarded and wholeheartedly accepted by society. Tales of the kindness, beauty and divine likeness of these mythical beings are meant to humble humans and inspire them to overcome their cruelty and become greater than themselves..
