A person's systems constantly interact with each other in an attempt to achieve and maintain homeostasis (Ashford & LeCroy, 2013). A person receives energy from systems which is called “input” and sends energy to the systems; this is called “output” (Ashford & LeCroy, 2013). Systems theory attempts to look beyond a specific “problem behavior” in an attempt to determine the root cause of that behavior. The client is viewed as his or her entire system for determining the cause (Ashford & LeCroy, 2013). Through reflection, I realized that I use systems theory every day when I interact with students and when I discuss particular cases with my supervisor. Systems theory helps social workers determine what the target system is when working with a client. Often the target system is not the client. In my current position, we are working with a student who is a perfect example of this
