The discovery of Kepler-186f is a huge undertaking to discover planets like our planet Earth. This planet is called Kepler-186f and is one of five planets that have so far been captured by NASA's Kepler space telescope circling the star Kepler-186. This star is smaller and cooler than the Sun, of a type called an M dwarf or red dwarf, and all the planets it references are also small, measuring less than 1.5 times the size of Earth. Planet Kepler-186f is the smallest, being within 10% of the size of Earth and surrounds the farthest point from the host star, within the habitable zone. This is the zone around a star within which a planet can support fluid water on its surface given the right atmospheric conditions. The planetary structure of Kepler-186 is located towards the celestial body of Cygnus, about 500 light-years away. (Planet Astronomy Space Explora) Figure 1. Kepler-186f is less than 10% the size of Earth. A small number of Earth-sized planets were once discovered, for example Kepler-20e. However, all previously known Earth-sized planets are circulating...
