Topic > The Human Stain by Philip Roth - 947

“The Human Stain” is one of the greatest works and the author Philip Roth also created a wonderful story, which I had a great time reading. Roth Philip uses one of the interesting themes in his book such as love, identity and also family. By using these themes in his book he created one of the most interesting American stories. In this book there is a narrator, Nathan Zuckerman, who tells the story of his friend Coleman Silk, a very successful professor and also the dean of Athena College. He started the story during the time when the news was talking about the President of the United States, Bill Clinton, and the scandal with Monica Lewis. “The Human Stain” is an excellent book and its action is quite direct. When Nathan Zuckerman tells the story of Professor Coleman Silk who was accused of racism after talking about his two students and calling them "ghosts". But Coleman Silk also has another secret: he comes from a black family and has never revealed his secret to his colleagues, friends or even to his wife and children. It is the shocking surprise of Coleman's true identity and his secret history that Nathan Zuckerman follows in "The Human Stain." But at the end of the story the narrator, Nathan Zuckerman, learned Coleman's secret and his identity which he did not reveal to anyone. The author's writings on identity, such as when Coleman hides his secret of being from a black family and changes his identity to Jewish, pushes each reader to ask questions about their own identity and the elements that influence the re-creation of identities . Coleman explains to his mother that he will leave the family and plans to marry a white woman. When Coleman rejects his mo...... middle of paper...... the story of "The Human Stain" seems like a direct narrative, and according to the criticism of the readers' response, we understand that the writer wrote the book with a bright and intelligent individual in mind. This book is about the past and the present and also about reality which gives us an impressive reflection on what we could learn from each other. At the end of the story the narrator comes to an unexpected conclusion, having experiences that reveal his personal thoughts. The personal nature is one of the reasons why the book's ending holds such important meaning. For the reader the story is illustrated in the way the text deals with themes that are very close to some people of this world. By contrasting the characters in this story, the author Philip Roth uses to illustrate the world that suggests responsibility and obligation.
