For Islam to spread it is necessary for people to convert and be welcomed into the religion. Therefore, Islam spread through the conversion of several people to the religion. People who converted had different reasons for being open to religion. It wasn't just about accepting Islam and wanting to be part of it. people motivate conversion. In North Africa, for example, Islam spread as a rebellion against the Byzantines and Romans. It is stated that "the Christians of Egypt then saw the Muslims as liberators" (Gilbert & Reynolds 100). The similarities between Christianity and Muslims also made it easy to convert to Islam because the religion had similarities. Now in West Africa people had different reasons to convert. They did not convert to rebel but rather they converted because they no longer wanted traditional religion. They converted because they thought Islam could help them progress as a society and as individuals. Thus the jihadist movement began and Islam began to spread. Conversions also came to receive special privileges. In North Africa people converted so they wouldn't have to pay taxes and could have spiritual freedom (Gilbert & Reynolds 95). In West Africa they converted to Islam rather than face slavery (Gilbert & Reynolds 205). Therefore, the conversion of Islam occurred due to different factors in different areas, but the only way Islam could spread is if people were receptive to it.
