“All Rights Reserved” or “Copyright” is something that people see every day and means that it is unacceptable to copy, steal, modify or make any kind of modification to alter the original work. This is commonly seen on everyday things such as; photographs, TV programs and commercials, films, CDs, advertisements, books, articles and almost every item that a person will use, there will be the symbol of “All Rights Reserved” and “Copyright”. When a person looks at this symbol and continues to alter the work anyway, it is often called digital piracy. Digital piracy is a rapidly growing crime that has become increasingly simple and easily accessible to anyone with access to the Internet and/or technology. ITunes was a trend in the past, as mentioned before, but iTunes also has competitors. Other media sources such as Amazon, Redbox, Play Store, Netflix, Hulu and many other sources will rent media at very reasonable prices, these sources will also sell it, but at a price that a person would see in a leading competing store. A man named John Stubbs has conducted research on this crime of digital piracy and states that: “Some have speculated that pirated music already represents 10% of the total $12 billion US music industry” (21). This 12 billion dollars shows that media is becoming expensive and that many people are not even willing to pay two dollars for a couple of songs downloaded legally. Many of the illegal sources from which people obtain stolen media are sources that can cause viruses to the user. But most likely if the person uses a source that requires payment, then it should not be a concern because it is a safe and legal source. Much of the stolen media has been altered, but when purchasing media from a reliable source the person gets what they are paying for, the original. Even if it is extremely convenient to find a Redbox, or go online to Amazon, people will still commit the crime of digital piracy because they are not willing to pay, but the person is obviously willing to commit a crime. Many would not look at this as a crime because it is not very often that someone gets punished for this. Many people make fun of copyright laws, these people are not worried that violating the law could have harmful consequences for themselves. According to the United States, the Copyright Act of 1976 states: “The Copyright Act prevents unauthorized copying of a work of authorship.” (Tysver). When a person is punished for piracy, it is usually a punishment of community service, prison, and/or a fine. There are many cases of people being punished but not enough to worry these other pirates. If a punishment was very extreme and made news, people who downloaded illegally might actually think twice about downloading another type of media. Some people don't pirate digital media because of the possible consequences. These are the people who would compare the price of legally downloading a song or movie to the price of a fine, or the price of the bail needed to get the person out of jail. There are many laws that a person might discover that have to do with digital piracy and copyright. The reasons for these laws are what keeps an artist, actor, director, producer, manager and many others engaged in the work and also keeps the business in business. If everyone stole the media, these writers, singers and everyone else wouldn't be able to produce
