A good example of bureaucracy today would be a university or even the government itself. Although many bureaucracies today exhibit many of the characteristics described by Weber, there are still some that do not. Many bureaucracies exhibit characteristics of hierarchy of authority, specialization, formalized rules, and division of labor. However, there are many gray lines in between. In many bureaucracies there is often incompetence, favoritism and bending of the rules that go unnoticed most of the time. Furthermore, some individuals often abuse their position for personal gain, and some rules are unclear. Furthermore, nowadays people are not hired based on their qualities, as Weber said. In most cases, people are hired for impersonal reasons due to someone they know or through a promotion based on the performance of a task. Another problem is the fact that communication can be very difficult when everything has to be passed down from one level to the next. An example of this is when the 9/11 attack occurred. Since there are many different federal agencies, this causes communication problems between them because there is overlap when it comes to having responsibility for received intelligence and authority.
