American author, teacher, and mythologist Joseph John Campbell is widely known for his work in folklore and comparative culture. His studies led him to discover the pattern, the hero's journey. The sequence consists of three phases and exists in many relationships with Greek mythology and current popular culture. A modern example of the cycle occurring is the 2001 production, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. In the film, an orphaned boy named Harry Potter is invited to study at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In time, he becomes embroiled in a dangerous quest to save the magical community from the clutches of the Dark Lord. The film shows aspects of the traditional hero's journey as Harry leaves his cupboard under the stairs on Four Privet Drive, is initiated into the inexplicable world of magic, and returns home as a savior of supernatural beings and as the boy who came back to life. .Harry is first introduced to the wizarding world when he crosses the threshold between London and the invisible passages of Diagon's Alley after receiving help from his supernatural guide, Rubeus Hagrid. The half-giant, Hagrid, informs Harry of his fame and wealth in the wizarding world and invites him to study magic at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry immediately agrees and disappears into the storm, escaping his cruel and manipulative relatives (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone). Hagrid represents the monomyth's supernatural help by introducing Harry to his new life and explaining the true story of his parents' deaths. It also provides Harry with essential information to overcome obstacles later in his adventure. Another element of the hero's journey is to see...... in the center of the card......A classic hero's journey story is told in the film Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone because it contains all three stages of the scheme and consists of multiple elements in each stage, as demonstrated above. This modern film is a perfect model of the traditional hero's journey sequence. Embedded in this film is an important theme, humility. Unlike Lord Voldemort, Harry displays extreme modesty which earns him popularity and respect. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone emphasizes the importance of humility making it the reason for Harry's successes. When he faces his enemy, his humility is what allows him to obtain the precious object. Lord Voldemort, in contrast, brought about his own downfall when his evil actions brought gruesome consequences. The film shows that modesty can make the difference between the success and fall of your empire.
