One of the first things a paralegal needs to do is help with pre-claim investigations. This process includes the search for witnesses and their questioning. They also begin to collect documents and evidence and begin to arrange the facts in chronological order. The next process concerns the memories. The appellant's legal assistant can help draft the pleadings. The defendant's legal assistant can help investigate the claims and write responses. The discovery process is where the paralegal will spend much of his or her time. This is where paralegals assist attorneys in drafting interrogatories, preparing depositional summaries, creating and maintaining discovery indexes, and summarizing and analyzing items such as medical records and other documents. Legal assistants also help conduct legal research. Once that research is completed, paralegals can create legal research memos. In addition to legal research, paralegals also perform factual research. This information can come from many different types of sources as long as it is relevant to the case. Before the trial begins, the paralegal is responsible for making sure everything is in order. They also serve as a liaison between the trial team and witnesses, clients, experts and other members of the courtroom. During the trial the paralegal will assist the lawyers in any way they may need. Their responsibilities include setting up exhibitions, collecting documents and preparing the
