In this essay I will analyze the meaning of the word "narrative" using the examples I have chosen to understand how it provides us with information to connect with images images. The examples I have chosen are: the first in a series of three paintings by Augustus Leopold Egg entitled "Past and Present, No. 1", a photograph by Jeff Wall entitled "Insomnia" and a photograph by Tom Hunter called "The Way Home ". The artist Augustus Leopold Egg painted my first example, "Past and Present, No. 1", in 1858. Fowle (2000) has suggested that this painting shows a family in a normal domestic setting, but we see the mother and wife lying on the floor while her husband revealed his infidelity to her. We also see the two daughters in the background playing, unaware of their parents' situation. Photographer Jeff Walls took my second example, “Insomnia,” in 1994. Fremin (2010) highlighted the fact that “Jeff Wall's Insomnia is a definitive example.” of a scenic environment in which human figures relate to space in a psychological way that evokes the sensation of being confined both in space and in the psyche of the figure. The frantic expression on the man's face animates the otherwise still image and suggests that there was some sort of physical or internal struggle that left him lying under the table, panicking and sweating. I believe this image is the result of an encounter, physical or mental, that left the man in anguish and unable to find comfort in sleep. Photographer Tom Hunter took my third and final example, "The Way Home", in 2000. Cotton (2004) has suggested that this photograph is a modern remake of a Victorian painting by John Everett Mallais called "Ophelia" i.. .in the center of the card... I want to find and look for the beginning of the story it is telling. The image should show the moment of the story. Unlike a film, an image only shows a moment of a scene or story, so that moment it is portraying must show a real atmosphere to engage the viewer. To conclude, from the research I found, it emerges that there are many conflicting opinions on how narrative forms are represented. How people view narrative varies, depending on whether people view paintings or photographs as a form of storytelling or not. In my opinion, from my examples, I believe they meet the requirements of being a type of narrative in that they show a moment, almost a screenshot, of a, it could be, a movie or a TV show. Depending on the story they tell, I think it all depends on how powerful the story is and whether or not it can be captured in one frame.
