Aerospace engineering is a very difficult field to master. This field of engineering focuses on the "design, development, construction, testing, and operation of vehicles in the Earth's atmosphere or in space" (Britannica.com). Engineers often work in “specialist teams” that work on specific parts of a project. For example, teams might work on “aerodynamics, propulsion systems, structural designs, materials, avionics, and stability and control systems” (Britannica.com). many engineers may “specialize” in a certain “aerospace product” such as commercial airplanes, military fighter planes, helicopters, spacecraft, and missiles or rockets (Bls.gov). Many engineers are employed by companies that contract for the Department of Defense. Aerospace engineering began with the Wright brothers, “the fathers of modern manned flight” (Britannica.com). World War I was the first airplane boom. The planes were "designed and built for specific military missions" (Britannica.com). After the war, the planes moved from military to civilian air transport. The 1920s and 1930s saw great advances in aircraft design, engines, and metallurgy. A very important advance was the introduction of the monoplane. The first "all-metal monoplane" was designed and built in 1910, but was not accepted until 1933 (Britannica.com). Clarence L. “Kelly” Johnson was an aerospace engineer and “aviation legend” (Wvi.com). Johnson's achievements were extraordinary. “He played a leading role in the design of 40 world-famous aircraft,” (Wvi.com). Over half of the projects were his. He became the "vice president of advanced development projects" (ADP) or "skunk works" (Wvi.com). Johnson's "skunk works" team (Wvi.com) has designed some of the most advanced......middle of paper......Works Cited"Aerospace Engineering". Encyclopedia Britannica.
