COMPLETE STUDY ON ROAD ROUGHITY Road roughness is the deviation of the pavement surface from a real planar surface with characteristic dimensions which affects, for example, vehicle dynamics, quality driving, dynamic load and drainage longitudinal profile, transverse profile and transverse slope (ASTM E867). By causing vibrations in the vehicle, roughness has a direct influence on vehicle wear, driving comfort and safety. The relationship between vehicle operating costs and road roughness is well established through numerous studies conducted in India and abroad. Roughness measurements are an important factor in making decisions about spending limited budgets on maintenance and improvements. For this reason, several highway engineering agencies have adopted roughness specifications (Sayers et al, 1986). The parameters of longitudinal and horizontal variation of roughness are wave irregularity, wavelength, amplitude, frequency, speed (vehicle characteristics, tires, seat suspension, body structure, weight, etc.) and perception (sensitivity of passengers to acceleration, velocity, resonance and ...
