Introduction The Social Issue: Divorce and Depression Throughout the world, divorce is common and known among different societies, some with higher rates than others. According to Irvin (2012), a divorce occurs every 13 seconds in America. This is 6,646 divorces per day and 46,532 divorces per week. This is a social issue within our society that has many negative effects on everyone who faces this circumstance. The divorce rate in the United States is an issue that shows an increase in its rates compared to the past decades. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, approximately 50 percent of marriages end in divorce. There are many reasons for divorce, from “hard” reasons (for example, abuse and adultery) to “soft” reasons (for example, psychological and relationship problems). The two most destructive reasons for a divorce are physical violence or alcohol and drug problems, but these reasons are less frequently seen as reasons for divorce. The most common reasons for divorce are “soft” reasons. According to William, a recent national survey found that 73% believe “lack of commitment” is the primary reason for divorce. Other reasons were “too much fighting, infidelity, marrying too young, unrealistic expectations, lack of equality in the relationship, lack of preparation for marriage and abuse” (William, p10). Divorce is known to be the second most stressful event in life, preceded only by the death of a spouse, and what is this stress capable of? It is sending a serious threat of anxiety and depression to people's limbic system as an emotional center in the brain. According to Taylor and Beth (2009), the stress of divorce has driven people beyond the normal grief experienced during divorce and into clinical depression. “Nearly 15 million American adults, or about 6.7%… by the middle of the paper… will end up divorced. It is important to understand that the effects of divorce are exclusive both for the individuals but also for the children involved. Research has been presented on the impacts of this social problem that affects both women and men. People depressed by divorce have been identified as being at high risk for depression and may have other high-risk behaviors. The disintegration of their family structure and their idea of the ideal marriage creates mistrust and fear of their marital success. It is not to say that every partner who experiences divorce will have these negative effects. In order to minimize the negative effects of depression due to divorce on one's life and the lives of others, they need to be in communication with each other and this will help manage the mistrust and negative consequences that children may face in their lives..
