Topic > Ethics of Technology in the Classroom - 707

Technology in the classroom is important to assist in the learning process; however this is creating new challenges for teachers. Teachers are now required to educate students about the importance of technology ethics. Computer ethics are the moral guidelines that govern the use of computers and networks (Shelly, G, Gunter, G, & Gunter, R 2012). Classroom ethics also require that teachers explain what plagiarism is and the correct way for students to give credit to information obtained from another source. Teachers must also have a plan to address Internet safety, as well as develop a student usage agreement and discuss ethical practices when using technology in the classroom. Internet security is important to keep students safe and protect school computers. net. A firewall is useful for protecting the school's computer network. A firewall limits access to data on a network (Shelly, G, Gunter, G, & Gunter, R 2012). There are many firewall programs such as Norton and McAfee. Another way teachers can promote Internet safety is to establish clear guidelines on which Internet sites to visit. Teachers can also check students' computer history to determine what content they have watched. Teachers and parents can also use filtering software to block unacceptable material. Teachers should encourage their students to always practice Internet safety. It is important that students continue to practice safety behaviors so that Internet safety becomes a habit (Yoon, C, Hwang, J, & Kim, R, 2012). Teachers also need to take the time to walk around the classroom and observe what students are doing while using technology in the classroom. T...... middle of paper...... between computers. Filtering software will ensure that students are accessing school-related material. The teacher is also responsible for teaching students the importance of copyright and plagiarism laws. Teachers have the daunting task of teaching students not only the assigned curriculum, but also the life skills needed to stay safe while using all the new technology available to them.
