Topic > girl grade D. She has 3 older brothers and 2 younger brothers. All are currently in the school system. All 7 students suffer from the same problem; they are constantly absent from school. Kayla's grades have plummeted. At the beginning of the school year Kayla was an average student with areas of interest in reading. He has shown documented progress in Dibels and weekly tests. In November, Kayla's father lost his job and she has had little luck finding long-term work. Try to find work in nearby cities. Kayla's mom got a job at the neighborhood steakhouse/bar. Now he works at night. There have been signs of alcohol abuse by the dad and the older siblings are responsible for taking the younger siblings to school. Kayla and her siblings were all referred to the Student Assistant Team (SAT). The team is wondering whether this semester's wave of absences will have a long-term effect on Kayla and trying to decide what they can do for her or her siblings. This scenario is not uncommon for many districts. Absenteeism has become an epidemic that is spiraling out of control. Many districts are now finding that absent children not only affect their own grades, but can also affect their peers' grades, teachers' schedules and standardized test results. Why are the children absent? There are four main variables for school absences. These factors include family, school, economic, and student variables. As in Kayla's life, family problems can change the dynamics of a situation. There is a clear lack of parental control over children.
