Topic > War in the movies: Universal Soldier - 1313

Every war will have those who support it and those who are against the war. In 1965, those against the Vietnam War made their opinions known through many forms of protest, such as forming anti-war protest organizations, rallies, and music. Anti-war protest music was an opportunity to put people's views into song and hopefully spread their message. Buffy Sainte-Marie wrote the song “Universal Soldier” in 1962 and her message was that “Universal Soldier is about individual responsibility for war and how old feudal thinking kills us all” (Boulanger). The song "Universal Soldier" was used as a protest anthem during the Vietnam War and attempts to untangle one of life's paradoxes that war never leads to peace by examining a soldier who is representative of every soldier in every nation. The original "Universal Soldier" Soldier" was released in 1964 by Buffy Sainte-Marie, a well-known singer-songwriter of the 1960s and "famous for her hard-hitting protest anthems" (Perea). Beverly Sainte-Marie, nicknamed Buffy, she was born on February 20, 1941 on the Piapot Cree Free Nations Reservation in Canada. She was later adopted at a young age by an American family of Native American Mi'kmaq descent due to the death of her mother. Buffy was raised in Maine and in Massachusetts, thus obtaining dual citizenship for Canada and the United States. Sainte-Marie attended the University of Massachusetts where he began performing his songs in local coffeehouses. Vanguard Records signed a contract with Sainte-Marie 1964 released his first album, It's My Way (Perea). This album contained the song "Universal Soldier" which attracted the attention of the Scottish folk singer Donovan was an acclaimed singer of the 1...... ace of the paper . During the Vietnam War, soldiers had no choice whether to go to war or not. Refusing the draft could lead to prison, 2,000 men were held in prison for refusing the draft and those were just the ones who were caught among the 200,000 who protested the draft (Tindall 1353). Although Sainte-Marie makes a valid point that without followers there would be no war, war is inevitable. There are too many human beings who are hungry for power and would use any means to get it. The Vietnam War did not please many Americans because the United States did not necessarily have to engage in that war, evident by the reunification of South Vietnam and North Vietnam two years after the United States withdrew all its soldiers (Vietnam). “Universal Soldier” was partially written, but for the most part was accurate as to the history of the war.
