A. Inflammation1. In terms of the mechanism of inflammation, explain how PRICE steps can minimize Dave's inflammation. Inflammation is the cleansing of a wound and we recognize it by redness, swelling, heat and pain. The impact and sprain of the ankle killed cells, damaged fibers and altered the chemical composition of the interstitial fluid. Lysosomes release enzymes that destroy damaged cells and attack surrounding tissues. Debris, fluid and dying cells build up, causing pressure, while histamine, heparin and prostaglandins increase blood flow, increase vessel permeability and cause pain. Ice helps relieve local temperature rise, and compression helps constrict vessels, reducing swelling. The elevation will also reduce swelling by decreasing blood flow to the area. Protecting the lesion and resting will allow it to heal faster and with fewer additional cells damaged (Martini 142-143).2. Although Dave has been prescribed a pain reliever, there are over-the-counter pain relievers such as aspirin, acetaminophen, and NSAIDs (such as Aleve). Choose one of these over-the-counter pain relievers and explain how it reduces pain. By blocking the effect of the enzyme cyclooxygenase, the functions of prostaglandins, such as sensitization of pain receptors to mechanical and chemical stimuli and dilation of blood vessels, decrease (Merck 408). Pain and swelling are reduced.B. Fainting1. Why did Suzie faint when she left the table? Explain the specific changes in her CVS that caused her to faint. Sitting or standing up too quickly can cause fainting, because the change in position causes blood to pool in the legs, resulting in a drop in blood pressure. If Suzie fainted because she hadn't secretly eaten bre...... middle of paper ......c. 2011. .http://www.eatingproblems.org/epseffect.html"Physiology and Psychology: Performance Benchmarks - Cardiac Output."
