Topic > Analysis of The Love Song Of J. Alfred by TS Eliot...

For example in the poem he says: “...It's time to turn back and go down the stairs, With a bald patch in my hair- [ They will say: “How his hair is becoming so thin!] My tailcoat, my collar that reaches firmly to the chin, my necklace rich and modest, but supported by a simple brooch- [They will say: “But how his arms and your legs are so thin!”]…” This quote is an example of Prufrock overthinking situations. He wants to go to the party and ask a question but can't stop thinking about whether he will be judged by the people at the party because of his bald hair and skinny body. But a typical person today would recognize the fact that the people attending the party will care about the party they are attending rather than the minor details about him. This is another case where Prufrock is not typical of people today. People today tend to overthink things, but Prufrock takes it to another level by overthinking things that normal people wouldn't do and allows it to influence every choice he makes, even the simplest ones in his life.
