Growing up in Africa, I saw little of computers. My high school received its first computer in 2006, just two years before I graduated, and prestigious institutions, such as hospitals, limited its use to data storage. Despite their scarcity, their flaws, such as mismanagement, insecurity and corruption, were evident all around me. This birthed and ignited my passion for technology and encouraged me to seek out resources that exposed me to computers as a problem-solving science. I've known cyber cafes that were remote and expensive, but the investment was worth it. I began to notice the correlation between information technology and data management and security, and their correlation with other disciplines. As a result, I developed the dream of applying various data management skills and establishing strict security systems in the company's various facilities to improve the completion of operations. My educational and professional goals have, therefore, been shaped by engagement in interdisciplinary studies that explore how computing can meet the needs of developing countries. My interest in these areas was solidified two summers ago when I participated in the Distributed Research Experience for Undergraduates (DREU) at The Ohio State University (OSU). For 10 weeks I worked with Dr. Christopher Stewart, a graduate professor at OSU, and Jing Li, a graduate student, to evaluate the feasibility of data centers powered by renewable energy. I examined energy flow at different levels by collecting energy usage information in a few local data centers and organizing this information to capture the coordination of energy delivery in each data center. Next, I systematically read power consumption metrics from various LCD d... middle of paper... and (mostly for security reasons) are tasks I would like to work on for a long time. After completing this degree, I will have developed greater critical analysis and problem solving skills to address and propose rewarding plans for complex issues in society. Having lived in a developing and developed country, the application of data management with a quality security system in all parts of society is becoming indispensable in third world countries where the lack of effective means to create, recover and interpreting information and misuse of information make planning and therefore management very tedious. With my degree I aim to intelligently provide this society with the technological means that can promote its development. This ambition to excel in my interests and at the same time have a positive impact on my society is the impetus for my candidacy.
