In the story “A Rose for Emily” written by William Faulkner, Emily, the protagonist, is shown as someone whose life is falling apart and taken down from society. Emily in this story could be described as a victim of society and her father. Emily Grierson's imprisonment, the loss of her father and Homer, and constant criticism have driven her madness. Emily was kept confined by everything around her. Her father had given the people of the town a large amount of money, which made Emily and her father feel superior to others. “The Griersons held themselves a little too high for what they really were” (Faulkner). Emily's attitude had developed as a conceited and stubborn girl and her father was responsible for this attitude. Emily was a normal girl with aspirations of growing up and finding a partner who she could soon marry and start a family, but all of that was impossible because of her father.
