The Jungle by Upton Sinclair was about Jurgis Rudkus, a Lithuanian immigrant who came to the United States to discover his dreams, hopes, and desires. He brought his family to Chicago to start a new life. He worked in meatpacking factories that were unsanitary and for brutal hours that led to starvation. He was mistreated and realized that the American dream was not as easy as it seemed. The book deals with disease, hunger, corruption, crime, poverty and death. “Leave it to me; leave it to me. I will earn more money and work harder." This was often said by Jurgis because he and Ona always struggled with money and a job, but Jurgis never wanted Ona to stress over these issues. Jurgis always took responsibility when it came to making serious decisions because he knew he was the right man and needed to stand his ground. Throughout the book Jurgis always tells Ona that he will work harder, even though he can no longer physically work because his body is too tired. “In the end it was thanks to a newspaper that he found a job, after almost a month of searching.” This shows the real difficulty of being an immigrant and having no experience finding a job. Jurgis had many jobs all over Chicago and they were not all easy to find, he had to fight for a position. Most of the book is set in Chicago in 1906. As I read Jungle I saw from beginning to end the struggle that an immigrant family had to face and I realized that living in the real world is much more difficult, especially if you don't have a 'instruction. . The Jungle is an American classic because of its role in the Food and Drug Administration and making a difference to all workers in the meatpacking industry. Throughout the book the author illustrates... paper……and. I would recommend this book to others for learning purposes because it is entertainingly written but also teaches you what slaughterhouses were like. After all of Jurgis' hard work working in Chicago, he finally made a difference with the slaughterhouse rules. If it hadn't been for Jurgis standing up and saying something, the change would not have happened and the workers and animals would have continued to be mistreated. My last impression of the book was positive because the fact that a change has been made thanks to this book and that many people have benefited from it makes me happy. Immigrants already have a difficult enough time coming to the United States and should not be mistreated where they work. Overall, The Jungle was a great book to read and gave me a real-life perspective of an immigrant working hard to achieve the American dream..
