I was a student athlete who played football, ran cross country, and did track and field. Because of my commitment to sports during my four years, I spent a lot of time in the athletic trainer's room recovering from an injury or working to prevent one. The more time I spent with the athletic trainer, the more I knew I wanted to pursue a career in Kinesiology. During my four years of high school, I received a lot of help from the athletic trainer and my goal is to show my gratitude by becoming an athletic trainer and helping athletes or those who are physically active. I aspire to make a positive difference in the lives of student athletes and any organization I am associated with. Mission Statement With optimism and a desire to make a difference, I am committed to completing my career plan in Kinesiology with a concentration in exercise science to become an athletic trainer. As an athletic trainer I will take responsibility for providing a learning climate that will help my clients learn new skills, knowledge and behaviors that will help them reach their maximum potential and enhance their active lives. It is an athletic trainer's obligation to prevent, recognize and rehabilitate injuries resulting from physical activity, while being able to respond effectively to the changing demands of the profession. Using social skills, I will build social relationships with clients, to make assessment and treatment much more effective and avoid unnecessary medical treatment. With enthusiasm and motivation to make a difference, I will continue to learn new skills as an athletic trainer to provide exceptional help to any client. Skills Acquired In addition to knowledge, there are many skills you need to acquire to become an athletic trainer such as flexibility, communication skills, and compassion. Through experiences and training, I have acquired skills that will help me in my career. For example, flexibility is a skill I have acquired over time because being a full-time student and having a job requires a wide range of flexibility in my schedule to manage both work and school. Being flexible is a skill that all athletic trainers must have because an athletic trainer's schedule is always subject to change. This occurs if the athlete's practice or game has been delayed or postponed. Communication skills are also an important skill for an athletic trainer because it can help them build relationships with their clients and make the treatment or rehabilitation process easy. Good communication skills are a skill that I have required over time from my current job. As a tutor in an after school program, for me it is.
