In the book Heartaches by H. M Irwing, Anna Walter Simmons had a treacherous upbringing. Even though her stepfather is buried, she feels no remorse. It's not a loss but a relief. One that is short-lived when she sets her sights on Brian, her stepfather's son who she believes is responsible for her father's death. However, not much is said about this murder in the novel. Despite her mother Jane Simmons living in constant fear of annoying Brian, Anna must endure the bullying she encounters at her vocational school. In a state of low self-esteem, she finds comfort in the arms of one Matt Preston and ends up doing everything humanly possible to please him as her first boyfriend. The relationship lasts only six months. Anna's miserable situation gets even worse when her boyfriend, Matt Preston, along with his brother Jason Preston and father Peter Preston drug and rape her. Heartbroken, desperate and having lost the will to live, Rafe Brown comes to the rescue. Anna opens up to Rafe then leaves her mother's house to stay with him and her Aunt Bella, a friend of Anna's mother. Rafe is also battling his own demons and has had his share of problems in life. He was gang raped during his military training in Syria. He saw the same pain and torture in Anna and dedicated himself to helping her even when no one would come to her aid. They both embark on a journey to face their deepest fears and find justice for themselves. These wounded souls come together and find themselves loving each other unconditionally in the midst of their terrible experiences. Say no to plagiarism. After reading the title, my expectation was a scenario where the bad guy breaks her heart and the lady is left to reflect on her miserable love life. This is not the case with this novel. It's emotionally deep and very intense. I would therefore like to commend the author for exploring a path not taken by many when it comes to writing bad boy romance novels. Furthermore, the author challenges the norm that the victim in cases of rape is always a woman. The character Rafe, a well-built man, is subjected to this painful ordeal. For these reasons I would give this book 3 out of 4 stars. I am particularly fascinated by the fact that the male protagonist Rafe Brown is not your typical hero; he too is dealing with his own torturous experiences. He is therefore in a better position to fully understand what Anna is going through. His love story with Anna is quite realistic, the two gradually fall in love as time goes by. As the story develops, the bond between them also grows. The novel contains several erotic scenes that might be a little overwhelming for a reader, so I highly recommend it for adults. Children and those who may be affected by reading about rape cases should stay away from this book. In my analysis, the novel tends to slow down at the beginning but picks up quickly as events unfold. After reading the first part of the story, I was left wanting to read the second to satisfy my curiosity. What happens to Brian and the Prestons? Will Anna be able to defend Rafe as his past catches up to him? Can Anna and Rafe successfully weather this storm? The story flows from chapter to chapter in a well-organized manner, so the author supports the reader throughout the entire novel. The author's audacity in writing on the topic of rape is also to be appreciated since little is said about it in society. This novel is a must read.
