My topic is about drug addicts where I will talk about how they cause problems within families and friends, and also to the individual's health and well-being. Addiction is a disease in which it destroys relationships and life. An addict can lose family, friends, work and many other things. The reason I chose this article is because I personally have a long family history of drug abuse within my biological and extended adoptive family. It breaks my heart to see the negative effects it has on my family, and I want to talk about this issue so I can reach someone who is struggling with addiction so they may want to get help before it's too late. I believe that if an addict gets a wake-up call and sees how his family is there to support him, he might realize that he needs help. They don't always have the opportunity to change, but I believe in second chances in life. It also includes what the risk factors and warning signs are, as well as the individual and social impact. The two NASW Value Principles that I have chosen for this document are Dignity and Value of the Person and Importance of Human Relationships. Dignity and worth of the person is when, as a social worker, you do not judge the person based on their cultural and ethnic background, but I feel this can be extended to not judging them based on their drug abuse background. If they were in prison for this reason, it doesn't matter. Also, if they have lost their job, family, friends, or morals, that doesn't mean they don't deserve help, because if you have the opportunity to help them, you should.
