Topic > Classification of Different Levels of Educational Objectives

Bloom's Taxonomy is a classification of different levels of educational objectives used to develop higher-level thinking skills. It is a model that allows teachers to present a full spectrum of six variety ideas and concepts to meet students' needs. Throughout my academic experience, I realized that my teachers focused primarily on remembering, with some cases requiring understanding. The concept of remembering was used in the context of exams. Most of the questions, both short answer and multiple choice, were based on the exact wording of what was in our notes and reading manuals. As for the concept of understanding, it was used when it came to writing essays. I was taught to take topics and put them into our own words so the teacher would know if I understood the material or if it was simply a matter of copy/paste. As for creation, the ability to create was only allowed up to a certain point, especially when it came to making projects or “show and tell presentations.” Say no to plagiarism. However, our grades were not based on originality but on the material presented, for example, how well we connected concepts from the class or the idea we were presenting. I remember very few times when I had to analyze and evaluate texts. Happened mostly in English or French classes, but rarely assessed. In my opinion, those choices were made because they taught that these methods were a beneficial way for educators to evaluate our understanding of things through memory. Most of my teachers believed that memorization equals understanding. However, they didn't realize that once I had memorized the material, I would soon forget it. Therefore, I didn't really learn. The teaching methods and assessments used by teachers have influenced my learning and my schooling to this day. Unfortunately school taught me to remember and I learned to memorize everything for exams; regardless of whether I understand the material or not. Therefore, I tend to perform better on exams that are based on the verbatim material I have studied, rather than opinion questions or case study questions. The learning objectives for the Literary Peace Project correspond to some higher levels of Blooms Taxonomy because, based on the interview that Ms. Das talked about and what students are asked in the lesson plan, they already have the knowledge to be able to apply "remember", understand and apply" to reach a higher level of knowledge. Based on this project, when the teacher has finished the material necessary to know, the students will be able to summarize (represents the evaluation or creation) of the different poets/poems discussed in class, rather than simply asking students to “remember” the different theories by having them choose from a predefined description or “understand” or “apply.” Allowing them to explain and expand the theories in their own words, “evaluating " the material. Furthermore, students will be able to creatively design (represents the creative aspect) their own poems, to be able to combine information and concepts. Please note: this is just an example.
