Engineering didn't seem like a possible career to me as a child with high aspirations. However, it is an ambition that I have developed. Mathematics and physics have always been my strongest subjects in school, mostly due to my curiosity towards them. What fueled my interest in learning about these topics in more depth were channels on YouTube, such as Vsauce, Veritasium, and Ted Talks. They each delve into a wide range of topics ranging from space travel to the concept of supertasks, which helped feed my curious mind. Therefore, engineering was an obvious choice of study. It used a nitinol wire system and integrated spring joints along a thin titanium exoskeleton to apply additional force to any grasping motion. The result was a product that I could partially model in CAD software and then 3D print. During my GCSEs I also gained work experience at MOOG, Tewkesbury. It was here that I designed and digitally stress tested the keys in CAD software which I then 3D printed and physically tested. This was my first insight into the use of electronic software when I visited CERN earlier this year as part of a school trip. The experience was enthralling and seeing a process from start to finish is something that pushes me forward through tasks. The sense of accomplishment at the end of something you've dedicated yourself to is addictive and can be adapted to many situations. Outside of instruction, I dedicate my weekends to mountain biking technical trails at local bike parks and have been doing so for 10 years now. After doing quite a few challenging rides and climbs, I learned to overcome the mental barriers that would otherwise have stopped me. Furthermore, I engage in all kinds of racket sports, including squash and table tennis at the forefront. I have participated in numerous local squash tournaments and have competed in the Cheltenham Table Tennis League for 2 years so far. Through my experiences I have developed a variety of key skills required for any group project. For three years I volunteered as a youth leader at the Covies Youth Group; a local Christian youth group that aims to teach church kids aged 10-15. The role involved leading groups of up to 15 children in sporting or craft activities, acting as an appropriate role model and guiding them to behave responsibly.
