The study used the five stages of developmental hallmarks to determine the level of hopelessness in each individual. The five steps of developmental hallmarks included; explorations of identity, age of instability, age of more self-focused life, age of in-between feelings, and age of possibilities. Understanding these five developmental characteristics was detrimental to understanding the perspective of these individuals. In turn, having an empathetic perspective can help understand why these individuals have developed a sense of hopelessness, which unfortunately sometimes leads to suicidal thoughts and harmful behaviors. The study conducted collected the individual's level of anxiety based on the participant's age, gender, and the level of academic difficulty the student was experiencing in school. Hopelessness was the specific criterion for the study and to determine whether anxiety and depression were related to feelings of hopelessness. Of the one hundred and fifty participants selected for the study, only one hundred and thirty-two people completed it. Of these participants, 66.7% were women and 33.3% were men. The ages of these individuals ranged from twenty to thirty years. All participants were also current college students. To complete the study, students were required to complete the scales of the research instruments within the allotted time period of fifteen to twenty minutes. The research instrument scales used for this study were; The Beck Despair Scale, the Anxiety Scale for personality and ability tests, and a form with personal details. The Beck Despair Scale includes twenty different statements, with the option to answer true or false to each question. After the questionnaire was completed, the students' scores were tallied to determine the level and presence the student was demonstrating at that time. In the Institute of Personality and Ability Testing Anxiety Scale, the survey was composed of forty questions that determined the level of anxiety present in the student. This scale was used to measure stress at the following levels; poor self-control, emotional instability, suspicion, apprehension and tension. By testing these five dimensions, it showed broad significance with the ability to predict despair. This test used a three-point rating scale to determine the amount of anxiety present. Finally, the Personal Details form was a form that documented the participant's name, age, gender, the name of the course they were taking, and the current semester. A final question on this form was whether or not the individual was currently struggling with their academics. The results of this study demonstrated the connection that appears to exist between anxiety and despair. The factor that was shown to increase anxiety the most was academic performance. The results also determined that men have a higher level of hopelessness than women, thus proving.143074
