The Free State of Jones outlines the struggle and journey of many on their path to gaining respect and citizenship in America. Between 1862 and 1876, issues of class, racial equality, nationality, and patriotism were particularly present in America's southern states (TFSOJ note). During these periods plantation owners relied heavily on the service of slaves to plant, cultivate, and harvest vital crops that would lead to their master's success (FRONT NOTE LN). Landowners with slaves were envied by many as in some cases they were later pardoned from military service with the introduction of the "20 Negro Rule" which provided some form of protection to those wealthy enough to own at least 20 or more slaves (NOTE ON FOOT TFSOJ ) Say no to plagiarism. The American Civil War was largely a class battle in which the poor fought for the interests of the rich who had a predominant influence on the country at the time. Many children and men were taken from their families and forced to fight in this war, which ultimately took its toll (NOTE R). Given the nature of the war, many realized their potential fate, leading them to desert or even rebel against the confederacy, as Newton Knight does in The Free State of Jones. As deserters, homeless women and children, and runaway slaves joined the revolt against Confederate soldiers there were enough to bring these diverse people together for common patriotic interests... As mentioned in the Confederate headquarters in the film, the company created by Newton Knight contained approximately 250 men, including runaway slaves who simply didn't have much to lose (TFSOJ FOOTNOTE) . Many of those who ended up fighting alongside the unionists had already been sentenced to death, had few or no rights, or had very little to lose in terms of a sense of ownership. It is assumed that they would die for their cause while actively pressing for their statement. to be seen and heard.
