Topic > The Role of Women in the Hills as White Elephants

Along with the responsibilities a man has when in a relationship, women have the same right to decide the goals of the relationship and their own. Hills Like White Elephants, by Ernest Hemingway portrays the image of man as a powerful coward incapable of being responsible for his own actions; but even worse is the image of a woman who authorizes her partner to decide everything as he wants. The young woman and her partner discuss the possibility of having an abortion for the unwanted child she is carrying. He says, “If I do it you will never worry… Then I will do it. Because I don't care about myself” (Quote). The man tries to show his concern by saying, “I don't want you to do anything you don't want to do. I'm perfectly willing to go through with it if it means anything to you” (quote). Unfortunately, the man here is not interested in taking responsibility, but he is not to blame. A woman who isn't even sure if she wants a drink at Anis del Toro with or without water, rather waits for her lover to decide for her. A mother still to be made who chooses the man before the life she carries in her womb. This is the image of women that has been portrayed since ancient Mesopotamia, but back then women had no choice but to be submissive.
