Initial Reaction This research article is from the United Kingdom and the author questions whether the findings of this study will have heuristic relevance and applicability to nursing and healthcare in the United States (US). Primary healthcare in the UK is provided through the National Health Service (NHS); The writer has little knowledge of how it works and its impact on patient care and nursing. This limited knowledge may introduce bias into this critique. Descriptive Vividness The significance of this study is to determine whether a preadmission clinical process can be developed and implemented to positively impact the physical, psychological, and social health needs of outpatient patients. The purpose of this study is “to clarify patient perceptions of pre-assessment preparation prior to day surgery” (Gilmartin, 2003, p. 244). This researcher identifies four themes related to patient perceptions of pre-assessment preparation prior to day Surgery; efficient functioning, assessment of patient suitability, experience in giving information and problem of cancellation. Minimal excerpts are provided for three of the four themes; the fourth theme, the problem of erasure, is completely in narrative format. Although the emphasis of the findings was on most of the extracts, this researcher included negative case studies under two themes; efficient functioning and the experience of giving information. Efficient operation was described by most participants as being delivered in a timely manner, while some (numbers, not men…half of the paper…) did not. This study could have been improved by expanding the sample group from various preassessment clinics and to include different ethnicities and representations of various surgical specialties. Furthermore, another credible author would have increased the reliability of the entire study. The writer suggests that the study be replicated in the United States, with the suggested improvements applied in the US healthcare system. Works CitedBurns, N., & Grove, S.K.
