Rudyard Kipling was born on 30 December 1865 in Bombay, his father was a professor of architectural sculpture at the Bombay School of Art. In 1870 Kipling's mother gave Rudyard up for adoption so that he could have the chance to receive a good British education. He was sent to live with the Holloways family, Kipling was often beaten by Mrs Holloway but never told anyone about his beatings or his failure to fit in at school. When Kipling was 11 years old a visitor saw how he was treated and immediately told his mother the news. Mrs Kipling rushed to collect Rudyard and took him with her on a long holiday so he could calm down and then he started attending a new school in Devon. His family didn't have enough money to go to college, so he returned to India. His father helped him get a job at the local newspaper so he could discover his surroundings. Kipling suffered from insomnia and was often seen wandering the city streets at night.
