Although hundreds of languages and thousands of dialects divide the world, laughter is universal. Laughter is not hindered by disability or the ability to speak legitimately. People in our society are extremely serious and tense. This makes sense, as numerous responsibilities are required of each person. An estimated one in ten American adults suffers from depression, a mental illness characterized by persistently depressed mood, low self-esteem, and loss of pleasure in normally enjoyable activities. If people learned to laugh more often, I believe they would experience less depression and sadness. Scientific research has proven that laughter truly is the best medicine. Laughter, real or fake, has the same effect on the body. It releases endorphins, the feel-good chemicals, and can temporarily relieve pain. Laughter also relieves physical stress in the body by relaxing muscles, increasing the body's resistance to disease, and improving blood flow. Whenever I feel stressed or start to get sick, I always watch funny videos on YouTube, a hilarious movie, and surround myself with people who always make jokes or say ridiculous things. It always makes me feel better physically, as well as brightens my mood for the rest of the day. Depression is a serious mental illness that has many avenues of treatment. Some of these include counseling, prescription medications, exercise, and proper eating and sleeping habits. Along with the use of any of these treatment methods, laughter can help lighten the mood of the person suffering from depression. Often, people diagnosed with depression say they experienced an unnaturally low mood and lost interest in things that brought joy and supplication... middle of paper... not full of regret. Life should be a wonderful adventure, full of loved ones, fond memories and laughter. However each person decides to use it, humor is up to him or her, but it is a necessary piece of life's puzzle. What would society be like if every person laughed ten times more a day? What would the world be like if people saw it as endless opportunities instead of endless turbulence? What else can people turn to besides humor? How different would each person's individual life be if they tried to find the humor in every situation rather than the embarrassment? What would it be like to turn on the local news and not see tragedy at every corner? The world would be drastically different if people learned to deal with stress in a healthy way, overcome everyday mistakes, laugh at themselves, and find the silver lining in difficult situations.
