René Descartes was a French philosopher, mathematician and writer. He was born on March 31, 1596 in the town of La Haye in the south of France. His father was Joachim Descartes was a lawyer, lived in Chatellerault and was in the Parliament of Brittany in Rennes. When he was one year old, his mother Jeanne Brochard died. He spent his early childhood with his grandmother Jeanne SainBrochard and his two older brothers and sisters. When René was about 10 years old in 1609 he joined the Jesuit College at La Fleche and remained there until 1614. He had five to six years of grammar school which included Latin and Greek grammar, and in the last three remaining years he took courses in mathematics. After leaving the Jesuit College, he studied at the University of Poitiers in 1616. He graduated and obtained a law degree to follow his father's wish to become a lawyer like him. His family all wanted him to become a lawyer but he never decided to practice law. In 1618 he decided to become a soldier and moved to Breda. He volunteered in the army of Maurice of Nassau, met Isaac Beekman with whom he wrote the Compendium of Music and interested him in the sciences and mathematical techniques in other fields. Rene began to focus more on mathematics and mechanical problems in 1619. Although he was still focused on mathematics, he wanted to travel to Germany to join the army of Maximilian of Bavaria. He was soon stationed in Ulm and was inspired by three dreams he had to create a new method of scientific discovery. Furthermore, in 1619 he invented analytical geometry which was a method for solving geometric problems and algebraic geometric problems. In 1637 he published Discourse on method, optics, metrology and geometry. In his book Discourse on Method he is known for the famous quote “I think, therefore I am”. Also in 1641 he published Meditations on First Philosophy, publishing together the first six series of Objections and Replies. 1642 published the second published edition together with all seven sets of objections and replies. During this period he also met Princess Elizabeth of Bohemia. 1644 visits France and publishes The Principles of Philosophy. René Descartes had many creative inventions. He was a great philosopher and mathematician. On July 19, 1635, he had a daughter named Francine Descartes. Rene lived in the Netherlands for more than 20 years but died in Stockholm, Sweden. He died on February 11, 1650. His health was fragile from a young age.
