In 2011 the Joint Commission drew attention to healthcare worker fatigue and the impact it was having on patient safety. They found a direct link between healthcare worker fatigue and adverse events. They recommended that healthcare facilities evaluate their policies to identify fatigue-related risks, such as off-shift hours and back-to-back shift work, and review their staffing to address areas that may be contributing to nurse fatigue (Martin , 2015). There are several approaches to take to solve the problem of nurse fatigue. First of all, the nurse has the obligation not to go to work if she is too tired. Schedules should be designed to help in this case where nurses are held responsible for choosing days that do not contribute to fatigue. Additionally, nurses can work as a team and cover for each other effectively during breaks. Nurses should be able to take stress-free breaks and not have to worry about their patients not being cared for. Finally, nurses should be educated about sleep hygiene and the effect it has on the patient
