SGGK is estimated to have been written in the 14th century. This was also a high point of active Christian misogyny. The misogyny sanctioned by the Catholic Church has manifested itself in a violently terrifying way: the witch hunt. In the same century that the SGGK was written, “arguments for the reality of demons had gained crucial support at the highest levels of the Church” (Holland 114). According to Irish journalist Jack Holland, “Overall it is impossible to estimate the number of victims who died at the hands of witches: estimates range from several million to around 60,000” (Holland 124). Some women were accused of harming men and children, some were accused of causing the Black Death, some were accused of having had sexual intercourse with the devil.
