This Paradise of the Blind novel, written by Duong Thu Huong, is set in the 1980s. The novel tells the life of a twenty-year-old Vietnamese lady, who has gone through many things in her life. While on a train to Moscow, Russia, he reflects on his childhood in Vietnam during the time of communism. Throughout the confusing but exceptional novel, Huong writes the story in the perspective of one main character, Hang, using many different motifs. Without a doubt one of the main reasons is the use and culture of food which is told throughout the novel. Food is mentioned countless times and is very significant throughout the novel and Vietnamese culture. This novel is a very good written novel, considering it was banned from Vietnam in 1993. There are many foods mentioned throughout the book, and each of them has great significance to the culture of Vietnam and the areas around that region, as well as in the book. , Paradise for the blind. The author emphasizes food in the novel, which reveals once the status of hierarchy, which also brings family as a connection with food culture that other homes in Vietnam have. In the novel, Aunt Tam, a main character hosts a huge banquet for Hang and they celebrated Hang's admission to university. Regarding some guests at the party, Aunt Tam states that "there will be many guests" (146), many of whom are "important people to the village" (147), such as the Vice President. Many important people were invited to the Hang celebration. The quotes show high class and respect in society, and are demonstrated by celebration. I noticed that in the novel, did you know the quotes, there was a long paragraph with tons of details and description of the......middle of paper......bond as well as Vietnamese society and food . symbolism through the motif of food in the links of the book, the author conveyed the message that no matter what you do or how serious the situation is, family, relationships and bonds between people are very important, and you would be nothing without the your family and friends. It's a great blessing to our family and friends, but it's also the love they give you. A quote from Dan Wilcox "I don't care how poor a man is, if he has his family, he is rich." and I completely agree with this quote because as shown in the novel with or without the symbolism of food, you would be nowhere without the love of your family and friends. The connection in the novel with food is so great and real in today's society. Food brings people together, as shown in the novel Paradise for the Blind, written by Duong Thu Huong.
