Have you ever been to Iowa State University and seen all the magnificent works of art on campus? Iowa State is home to one of the largest public art collections on campuses in the United States. There are over 2,000 works of public art (George Washington Carver). The founding of the Contemporary Art on Campus Collection and Program began during the Depression of the 1930s, when Iowa State President Hughes envisioned that "the arts would enrich and provide substantial intellectual exploration in our undergraduate curricula" (George Washington Carver). Don't you love art? Every day you wake up and experience some kind of artwork; whether it's a sculpture or just seeing something so wonderful, walking across the beautiful Iowa State campus you see many works of art, but the one that stands out to me was the George Washington Carver sculpture When you first look at it you won't catch all the little details behind his beautiful work. Once you know all the fine details that Christian Petersen did when creating George Washington Carver and why he created him the way he did; you will like it much more. Knowing information about the artist plays an important role in why certain works of art were created in such an extraordinary way. Artist Christian Petersen practiced his art during a transitional phase in American sculpture in which styles moved from the heroic to the realistic (George Washington Carver). In 1934, Iowa State President Raymond Hughes offered Petersen a one-semester residency to create the fountain and bas-reliefs in the courtyard of the Dairy Industry Building. Amazingly this one-semester job turned into 21 years, and from 1934 to 1955 Petersen served as Iowa State's sculptor-in-residence (George Washington Carver). According to t...... middle of paper......Status.The creation of a sculpture can last a lifetime if done as well as this George Washington Carver sculpture he designed. Artist Christian Petersen has done an exceptional job to create a work that not only he likes, but that others can see and appreciate as well. Every work of art has a story and this is overlooked most of the time. People seem to look at the artwork and that's about it. When you start a book you only look at the cover and don't actually read it? No, because then you create a false illusion. The sculpture of George Washington Carver is more than just a silhouette of himself, it highlights the vision for the future of agriculture and his passion for science, students and farmers that Carver had. I recommend everyone go and check out the amazing work Christian Petersen did in creating the George Washington Carver sculpture.
