Optogenetics is a relatively new area of technology, first described in 2005 [1, 2]. This technology has progressed rapidly since it was first mentioned and continues to advance at a rapid pace [1]. Although it is a new technology, it is believed to have opened up new research areas of biology [2]. Optogenetics combines several technological aspects from the fields of optics, genetics and bioengineering to enable all new ways of investigating intact neural circuits [3]. Through optics, this technology allows the study of certain neurons in an area without compromising the neurons surrounding them and does so “at high temporal and spatial resolution” [1]. Without disturbances in the neurons surrounding those studied, the biological system as a whole does not cease to exist. The combination of light for control and imaging of selected targets by genetic technologies does not allow disturbance of surrounding cells and tissues [2, 3].
